GPRTU Branch Executives Take Ashanti Regional Chairman to Court Over Alleged Misuse of Funds

A group of branch executives from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in the Ashanti Region have filed a lawsuit against the regional chairman, Mr. Sumaila Boakye, accusing him of misusing union funds.

The executives allege that the chairman has used union funds for personal expenses, failed to account for monies collected from members, and made unauthorized transactions, resulting in financial losses for the union and its members.

Led by Mr. Peter Kwame Donkor, the four branch executives took the matter to the Kumasi High Court, which summoned the regional chairman.

“After the first hearing, the court suspended the chairman from performing his duties, but the chairman appealed his suspension at the supreme Court to allow his participation in the regional executive elections, of which the court granted,” he stated.

Mr. Kwame Donkor emphasized that if the chairman is found guilty after the court proceedings, he will be removed from his position as chairman of the union in the Ashanti Region, despite the appeal.

The case has been adjourned to April 3, 2025, for the next hearing.

This development comes amidst reports of internal conflicts within the GPRTU, including allegations of national officers dissolving the union’s leadership and taking over its management.
