KNUST to Collaborate With Government to Boost Traditional Medicine – New Governing Council Chair

The newly appointed Chairman of the Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Akyeamfuo Asafo Boakye Agyemang-Bonsu, has announced the university’s intention to collaborate with the government to stimulate traditional medicine in Ghana.

This partnership aims to utilize the potential of traditional medicine, promoting its development and integration into the country’s healthcare system.

KNUST’s Department of Herbal Medicine has been actively engaged in research and training programs to enhance the practice of traditional medicine.

The department has organized training sessions for traditional medicine practitioners, focusing on good manufacturing practices, patient referral procedures, and quality herbal medicine production.

According to the chairman, the partnership between KNUST and the government will focus on conducting research to improve the efficacy and safety of traditional medicine products,

providing training and capacity-building programs for traditional medicine practitioners

and also provide them with machines for their research works, adding that this will improve standards for traditional medicine products and practices.

He revealed that the motive of the council is to enhance the quality and safety of traditional medicine products, increase access to traditional medicine services and promote the development of the traditional medicine industry.

He further indicated that the collaboration will foster innovation and research in traditional medicine.

Led by Prof. Isaac K. Amponsah, the department has been instrumental in promoting research and training in traditional medicine.

The Ministry of Health and the Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC) will play crucial roles in regulating and supporting the development of traditional medicine.

noted that practitioners will benefit from capacity-building programs and research initiatives, enabling them to improve their services and products.
