Cashew Farmers in West Gonja Cry Foul Over Price Undercutting by Aggregators

The Cashew farmers in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region have raised alarm over what they describe as exploitative buying practices by some cashew aggregators, who are allegedly flouting the approved minimum producer price.

According to the farmers, certain aggregators are purchasing raw cashew nuts at GH₵10.00 per kilogram—well below the GH₵12.00 minimum producer price approved by the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA).

The West Gonja District Co-operative Cashew Farmers and Marketing Union Ltd has strongly condemned the practice, warning that persistent non-compliance with the approved price poses a serious threat to the sustainability of the cashew value chain in the region.

President of the Union, Iddrisu Sumani Azambuja, described the situation as a “blatant violation of TCDA regulations” and called on relevant authorities to intensify monitoring and enforcement measures to curb the abuse.

He explained that the TCDA-approved minimum price is based on clearly defined quality standards, including a 46 out-turn, a 190 nut count, and a maximum moisture content of 10 percent. He urged farmers to sell their produce only to buyers who comply with these standards and to report any cases of underpricing to their cooperatives or appropriate authorities.

The Union has appealed to the Tree Crops Development Authority, the West Gonja Municipal Assembly, and the security agencies to collaborate in enforcing the approved minimum producer price. It stressed that cashew farmers deserve dignity, fairness, and protection under the law to sustain their livelihoods and the broader cashew industry.
