NorthCode Ghana over the weekend staged a vibrant Peace Tournament at Kalba in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region, bringing together residents, security personnel and sports enthusiasts to promote harmony through football.
The tournament, themed “Football for Peace and Unity,” was organized to strengthen social cohesion following the August 2025 Gbiniyiri clashes. The initiative aimed to use sports as a platform to rebuild trust and foster peaceful coexistence among the people.

The event featured local Kalba teams including Fulbes, Dagaabas, Brifors, Gonjas and Security Services XI who competed for trophies and medals in a festive and colorful atmosphere. Clad in vibrant jerseys, players thrilled spectators with spirited performances and nail-biting action from kickoff to the final whistle.

District Police Commander DSP Bayou Dakura and other security officials were present to support the initiative and cheer on the teams, underscoring the role of security services in sustaining peace within the community.

The Presiding Member of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Assembly, Hon. Abdulai Mohammed, commended NorthCode Ghana for its efforts in fostering peace and unity during and after the Gbiniyiri conflict. He disclosed that the district had spent a significant portion of its District Assemblies Common Fund to maintain law and order in the wake of the disturbances and urged the youth to eschew violence and embrace peaceful coexistence.

The Chief of Kalba, Kalbawura Amalia, also lauded the initiative and encouraged residents to see sports as a powerful tool for reconciliation and development. Community leaders used the occasion to emphasize the importance of engaging young people in positive activities that promote unity.
Mr. Luke Panpogee, Senior Project Officer for NorthCode Ghana, noted that the tournament goes beyond competition, describing it as a deliberate effort to “stitch together the fabric of the community through sports.”

The event also sparked lively discussions on how football and other sporting activities can serve as catalysts for social cohesion, inspiring neighboring communities to consider similar peace-building initiatives.
