A 17-year-old mother, Rose Addai at Apaaso in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region has recounted the circumstances that led her to dump her three-month-old baby girl into a toilet facility, attributing the incident to severe hardship and lack of support.
According to Rose, life became extremely difficult after giving birth as she struggled to cater for both herself and the baby. She explained that she had no stable source of income and often depended on others for food and basic necessities.
Narrating her ordeal, the young mother said she felt overwhelmed by the responsibility of caring for the child at such a young age. She added that the absence of support from the baby’s father and other relatives worsened her situation, leaving her frustrated and unsure about how to raise the child.
Out of desperation, she decided to abandon the baby in a toilet facility within the community, hoping someone would eventually hear the child’s cry and rescue her.
The incident came to light when residents heard the cries of a baby coming from the toilet facility. Alarmed by the unusual sound, some community members rushed to the scene and managed to rescue the infant.
The baby was quickly taken to a nearby health facility for medical examination and treatment. Fortunately, the child survived the ordeal and is currently receiving care.
The incident has shocked residents of Apaaso, with many expressing concern about the growing challenges faced by teenage mothers in some communities.
Following the rescue, the young mother was identified and subsequently taken into police custody to assist with investigations into the incident.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, while child welfare advocates have called for increased support systems, counseling services, and community interventions to help vulnerable teenage mothers and protect children from similar situations in the future.
