
A veteran Ghanaian gospel music icon Yaw Sarpong has died at the age of 66, his manager has confirmed. The celebrated musician, best known as the founder and leader of the renowned gospel group Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo, passed away on January 20, 2026 after a long battle with ill health.
Sarpong’s death marks the end of a remarkable musical and spiritual journey that spanned nearly five decades, during which he became one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s gospel music scene.
Born in Accra, Sarpong began his gospel ministry in the early 1970s and later formed the Asomafo group in 1986. Under his leadership, the band became synonymous with a distinctive style of contemporary Akan gospel music rooted in rich harmonies, disciplined arrangements and deeply spiritual lyrics that resonated with Christians across Ghana and beyond.
Throughout his career, Sarpong and Asomafo produced numerous gospel classics that continue to be sung in churches and worship gatherings, including “Wo Haw Ne Hwan,” “Tie Obiaa,” “Aduro Yesu,” and “Awurade Kasa.”
In recognition of his immense contribution to the Ghanaian music industry, Sarpong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards in 2025 a testament to his enduring impact and legacy.
His death comes just weeks after the passing of Maame Tiwaa, a key member and celebrated vocalist of the Asomafo group whose powerful voice helped shape its sound for over four decades. Tiwaa’s death in December 2025 was widely mourned across the gospel community.
Tributes have begun pouring in from fellow musicians, industry stakeholders and fans, all celebrating Sarpong’s life, ministry and the transformative role his music played in the lives of many. Details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family and management in the coming days.
His legacy as a gospel pioneer, mentor and spiritual singer will continue to inspire generations.
