Willingway Recovery Centre Educates Ghanaian Community in Dubai on Mental Health

The Willingway Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre Ghana has embarked on a mental health awareness campaign for the Ghanaian community in Dubai, aimed at promoting psychological well-being and addressing the growing mental health challenges facing Ghanaians living abroad.

 

The outreach programme, held on the theme “There is No Health Without Mental Health,” was led by the Chief Executive Officer of Willingway Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre Ghana, Mrs. Lydia Abena Manu Adofo, a mental health advocate and practitioner.

Speaking to the media, Mrs. Manu Adofo stressed the importance of prioritising mental health, noting that many Ghanaians who travel to Dubai in search of better opportunities often face severe emotional and psychological distress after being deceived by some travel agencies.

According to her, some victims arrive only to realise that the jobs and living conditions they were promised do not exist, leaving them stranded, financially burdened and emotionally traumatised. She explained that the resulting stress, anxiety and depression have left many mentally unstable, with some unfortunately resorting to suicide.

Mrs. Manu Adofo called on prospective migrants to thoroughly verify travel and employment arrangements before leaving Ghana and urged the authorities to intensify efforts to clamp down on fraudulent travel agencies that exploit vulnerable people.

She also encouraged Ghanaians living abroad to seek professional mental health support whenever they experience emotional difficulties, emphasising that seeking help is a sign of strength rather than weakness.

The Willingway Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre reaffirmed its commitment to expanding mental health education both in Ghana and among Ghanaian communities abroad, with the goal of reducing stigma, promoting early intervention and ensuring that no one suffers in silence.
