Residents of Amoamo, Anwiam and Amenase, three communities that share boundaries in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region, have staged a peaceful demonstration to protest against the operations of Day Shine Quarry Limited, accusing the company of causing severe environmental degradation and health challenges.
Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “We are slaves in our own communities,” the demonstrators expressed frustration over what they described as years of neglect and suffering without any meaningful benefits from the company’s operations.
According to the residents, the quarry’s activities have polluted water bodies, destroyed farmlands, contaminated farm produce with chemicals, and caused cracks in several buildings due to continuous blasting.
They alleged that the environmental impact of the quarry has made farming increasingly difficult, threatening their livelihoods and exposing residents to serious health risks.
The protesters also made allegations against the Adankranja traditional leadership, claiming that the Adankranja Manhene demanded GHC30,000 from an Abusuapanin for supporting a planned demonstration against the quarry. They further alleged that the Omanhene is behind the establishment and continued operations of quarry companies in the surrounding communities.
The demonstrators appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as well as the government and other relevant authorities, to intervene and investigate their concerns to protect lives, property and the environment.
Presenting a petition to the management of Day Shine Quarry Limited on behalf of the affected communities, the Assembly Member for the Adankranja Electoral Area, Hon. Nhyiraba Abigail, called on the company to address the grievances of the residents and engage the communities to find lasting solutions to the challenges.
The residents warned that they would continue to pursue all lawful means to seek justice until their concerns are addressed and measures are put in place to safeguard their communities and livelihoods.
