More than 45,000 people in the West Gonja Municipality have gained access to potable drinking water through a US$7.79 million investment by World Vision Ghana in a 22-year development and sponsorship programme.
World Vision Ghana on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, marked the successful completion of the West Gonja Sponsorship Programme, which, over the past two decades, impacted more than 77,826 people through interventions in water and sanitation, education, livelihoods and child protection.

Speaking at the closing ceremony in Damongo, the Acting National Director of World Vision Ghana, Joshua Roland Baidoo, described the completion of the programme as a new beginning rather than an end.
“Let us not see this as an end, but as a new beginning. Together, we’ve transformed lives. Together, we’ll continue building a future where every child experiences Life in All Its Fullness,” he said.

The programme implemented a range of interventions aimed at improving the living conditions of vulnerable groups, particularly children, women, young people and persons with disabilities.

Beyond livelihood empowerment, the initiative supported campaigns and projects aimed at tackling child malnutrition, open defecation, unemployment and rural-urban migration.
Mr. Baidoo stressed the need for continued collaboration among the West Gonja Municipal Assembly, beneficiary communities and other stakeholders to sustain the gains achieved under the Community Engagement and Sponsorship Plan.

The Municipal Chief Executive for West Gonja, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro, said the livelihood interventions were aligned with several government flagship programmes, including the Women’s Bank and the 24-Hour Economy.
He assured stakeholders of the Assembly’s commitment to working with relevant partners to sustain the interventions and ensure that the benefits of the programme continue to impact communities.

A beneficiary, Adjara Alhassan, a postgraduate student at the University of Education, Winneba, shared her personal experience of the programme, recounting how World Vision Ghana supported her educational journey from Basic Three through to the university level.
The closing ceremony brought together beneficiaries, traditional leaders, government officials and development partners to reflect on the achievements of the 22-year programme and discuss strategies for sustaining its impact.

The event ended with the presentation of citations to outstanding beneficiaries and an exhibition of products produced by beneficiaries under the various livelihood interventions.
