Ghana’s Poultry Crisis: Agric Minister Calls for Revolution to Save $2 Billion

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has sounded the alarm over the country’s massive expenditure on imported chicken, totaling over $2 billion annually.

To address this challenge, the minister is calling for a poultry revolution to reduce dependence on imports, promote self-sufficiency, and boost the nation’s economy.

Speaking to the media, Hon. Eric highlighted on revamping local poultry farming to boost local production to meet domestic demand and reduce reliance on imports.

He stressed on promoting agricultural interest among youth, by launching a nationwide initiative to encourage young people to take up careers in agriculture and poultry farming.

The minister highlighted on implementing a project to boost local poultry production and increase the availability of affordable, high-quality chicken products, citing the “Nkoko Nketenkete” project as an example.

He further proposed Collaboration with local companies to promote poultry feed production and support the growth of the industry.

Hon. Eric Opoku emphasized on generating employment opportunities in the poultry industry in order to contribute to the nation’s economic growth.

“Decreasing Ghana’s reliance on imported chicken will help save Ghana valuable foreign exchange,” he noted.

He stated that such policies will improve access to affordable, nutritious food for Ghanaians and enhance the nation’s food security.

The minister’s call to action highlights the need for collective effort to secure Ghana’s food future and strengthen its economic resilience.

By working together, Ghanaians can build a more sustainable and self-sufficient food system that benefits the nation as a whole.
