Asafohene Urges Chiefs to Embrace AI to Strengthen Traditional Leadership

The Asafohene who also serves as the Akwamuhene of the Asante Kingdom, Akyeamfuo Asafo Boakye Agyemang Bonsu, has called on traditional rulers across the country especially Asante Chiefs to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other modern technologies to enhance effective governance and decision-making within their traditional areas.

Speaking at the five-year anniversary ceremony of his enstoolment at Asafo Palace attended by chiefs, elders, academics, and youth leaders, the Asafohene noted that while chieftaincy remains rooted in culture and tradition, embracing innovation is essential to meeting contemporary governance challenges. He explained that AI could support chiefs in areas such as record keeping, land administration, dispute resolution documentation, and communication with their subjects.

According to him, the integration of AI into traditional leadership structures would help improve efficiency, transparency, and accountability without undermining cultural values. He stressed that technology should be viewed as a tool to complement, not replace, the wisdom and authority of traditional rulers.

The Asafohene urged chiefs to take keen interest in digital literacy and to encourage the youth within their communities to support palaces with technological expertise. He added that adopting AI-driven systems could help preserve historical records, customary laws, and genealogies for future generations.

Asafo Boakye Agyemang further called for collaboration between traditional authorities, technology experts, and educational institutions to develop AI solutions tailored to the needs of chieftaincy institutions.

The Asafohene concluded by emphasizing that traditional leadership must evolve with the times in order to remain relevant and effective, noting that the responsible use of AI could strengthen governance, promote development, and ensure the continued respect and relevance of chieftaincy in the modern era.
