Hundreds of households across communities in the West Gonja Municipality have been connected to the national electricity grid under the government’s Rural Electrification Intensive Programme.

The initiative forms part of the government’s commitment to achieving universal access to electricity by 2030 and improving the living conditions of residents in underserved communities.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Gyan Richard Mensah, said the project demonstrates the government’s determination to expand electricity coverage and accelerate rural development.

According to him, the newly connected communities have for years relied on generators, solar lanterns and kerosene lamps for their electricity needs, a situation he said had limited socio-economic development.

The Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Salisu Yussif Bia Wurbe, described the electrification project as timely and significant, noting that access to electricity would help correct years of infrastructural deficits while improving the quality of life of residents.

Member of Parliament for the Damongo Constituency, Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor, commended the initiative, describing it as evidence that national development can be achieved through continuity and collaboration between successive governments. He noted that the project reflects the collective efforts of both the previous NPP administration and the current NDC government to improve the welfare of the people.

Health workers in the beneficiary communities also welcomed the intervention. Dalabore Richard, a health worker at the Kpiri No. 2 CHPS Compound, said access to electricity would significantly improve healthcare delivery, particularly maternal and child health services, emergency response, and vaccine storage.

Government officials disclosed that 52 electrification projects, including solar power installations, are currently underway across the Savannah Region as part of broader efforts to make the region one of the most electrified in Ghana.

The Rural Electrification Intensive Programme is expected to stimulate economic activities, improve education and healthcare services, and enhance the overall livelihoods of residents in the beneficiary communities.
