COCOA BRUHAHA: Farmers Demand Proportional Price Increase, Call for COCOBOD Staff Reduction

Cocoa farmers are pushing back against what they describe as an unfair pricing system, insisting that while they are not resisting price adjustments, any reduction must be proportional to global market trends.

Speaking to newsmen amid ongoing discussions about cocoa pricing, Mr. Francis Teinor, President of Mankrong Cocoa Cooperative Farmers Association, emphasized that when cocoa prices appreciate on the international market, producer prices at home should also be increased proportionally.

“It is not that we are accepting the decline, but when prices go up, you should increase it proportionally.” He argued that fairness and transparency in the pricing formula will motivate farmers and sustain cocoa production across the country.

Mr. Teinor further appealed to colleague cocoa farmers to side with the government on the current state of cocoa price to ensure the sustainability of COCOBOD.

On the other hand, Francis Teinor also called on the management of the Ghana Cocoa Board, COCOBOD, to streamline its operations by reducing the number of workers in the sector, particularly those they claim do not contribute meaningfully to the sustainability and growth of the cocoa industry.

They believe cutting down excess staffing would reduce operational costs and allow more resources to be directed toward improving farmer welfare, boosting productivity, and strengthening the cocoa value chain.

The concerns come at a time when the cocoa sector continues to face challenges, including fluctuating global prices, climate impacts, and production constraints.

Farmers say they remain committed to supporting the industry but expect policies that reflect fairness, efficiency, and accountability.
