N/R: GNFS pushes for Fire Stations in all 16 Districts to curb property destruction

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has appealed for the establishment of fire stations in all 16 districts of the Northern Region to improve emergency response and reduce the destruction of lives and property.

Assistant Divisional Officer One (ADO1), Hudu Baba, made the appeal in an interview with the media, disclosing that the Service currently operates in only eight of the region’s 16 districts.

He described the situation as a major concern, explaining that the absence of fire stations in some districts often delays response to fire emergencies, resulting in extensive destruction of property.

According to him, establishing fire stations in every district would bring firefighting services closer to communities and enable personnel to respond promptly to emergencies.

ADO1 Hudu Baba also called for measures to reduce fuel consumption by the Service, stressing the need for economical use of resources to save money and improve operational efficiency.

His comments followed a fire outbreak at the Gushegu Nursing and Midwifery Training College in the Northern Region on Monday, August 17, 2026.

The fire, which started at about 7:28 a.m., destroyed the institution’s ICT laboratory and an adjoining classroom after the Ghana National Fire Service received a distress call.

ADO1 Hudu Baba appealed to the government and other stakeholders to support the establishment of additional fire stations across the region to strengthen fire prevention and emergency response.
