Daboya/Mankarigu MP Rewards Academic Excellence At Dream With Obei Excellence Awards 2026

52 best BECE students receive full SHS support as North Gonja records over 400 passes

The Member of Parliament for Daboya/Mankarigu Constituency, Hon. Mahama Shaibu Obei, has reaffirmed his commitment to improving educational standards in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region.

This was at the second edition of the Dream With Obei Excellence Awards 2026 held at the L/A Primary School Forecourt in Daboya, where outstanding Junior High School graduates were rewarded with educational materials to support their transition to Senior High School.

Three outstanding students from each participating Junior High School were selected for recognition. The packages included textbooks in English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies, as well as scientific calculators, exercise books, mathematical sets, mattresses, chop boxes and pens.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Mahama Shaibu Obei explained that the initiative was introduced in response to concerns over poor BECE performance in the district. He said the objective is to motivate learners, encourage teachers and position North Gonja among the best-performing districts academically within the next three to four years.

He pledged to expand the awards scheme in subsequent years, subject to the availability of resources, and commended teachers in the district for their dedication despite difficult working conditions.

The District Chief Executive for North Gonja, Hon. Abdulai Nasiru, described the awards scheme as a timely intervention that is helping to promote academic excellence and improve educational outcomes. He noted that the initiative complements President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda, particularly its emphasis on strengthening education and creating opportunities for young people.

A representative of the Ghana Education Service in North Gonja, Mr. Osei Bonsu, disclosed that more than 400 candidates recorded aggregates ranging from Six to 36 in this year’s BECE, with 52 of them selected for the awards based on raw scores to ensure fairness.

For the beneficiaries, the awards were not only a recognition of their hard work but also an encouragement to aim higher.

Two of the awardees, Rawudatu Yakubu of Daboya L/A Primary and Bintu Bawa of Daboya Girls Model School, expressed appreciation to the MP and pledged to study harder to justify the confidence reposed in them.

Parents and teachers praised the initiative, saying it will foster healthy competition and inspire greater commitment to teaching and learning.

The Dream With Obei Excellence Awards is expected to transform North Gonja into a district recognised not only for its potential but also for excellence in education.
