The Beverage Consumers and Bar Owners Association of Ghana, popularly known as the “Drinkers Association,” has issued an ultimatum to the government, warning of a demonstration if prices of beverages are not reduced.
The association cites the industry’s struggles despite the Ghanaian cedi’s recent appreciation against major foreign currencies.
The association is demanding that the government takes immediate action to reduce prices of beverages to revive the industry.
Speaking to the media in a press conference, Mr. Moses Onyah, Public Relations Officer (PRO), of the association highlighted significant challenges facing the industry, including high taxes on raw materials, leading to inflated prices and business collapses.
He revealed that the industry’s struggles have resulted in businesses collapsing, leading to job losses, affecting wholesalers and retailers.
The industry’s instability threatens its significant contribution to the nation’s economy, projected at US$31.80 million in 2025.
Despite the challenges, the association has been working tirelessly to promote responsible drinking habits and ensure quality beverages on the market.
Some of their initiatives include:
“Don’t Drink and Vote” Campaign
“Don’t Drink and Drive” Campaign and “Operation Check Your Bottle” to verify product registration.
The association has given the government a three-week grace period to address their demands. If their demands aren’t met, they will proceed with a demonstration.
The association is calling on President John Dramani Mahama and Minister for Trade and Industry Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare to take expeditious measures to reduce beverage prices and revive the industry.
