The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in the North Gonja District has intensified efforts to expand healthcare access by taking its public education and enrollment campaign to the bustling Daboya Market.
The outreach formed part of preparations toward the pilot rollout of the government’s Free Primary Healthcare initiative, aimed at improving access to quality healthcare services for residents.
During the engagement, NHIA officials educated traders, residents, and other stakeholders on the relationship between the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the Free Primary Healthcare policy, and the Mahamacare initiative, explaining how the policies complement one another to improve healthcare delivery.Speaking at the event, Regional Representative Mubarik Nuhu disclosed that nearly 35 percent of Ghana’s population remains outside the NHIS coverage bracket, leaving many vulnerable to denial of healthcare services when needed. According to him, the gap in health insurance coverage informed the government’s decision to introduce the Free Primary Healthcare initiative as a complementary intervention.
West Gonja Municipal Manager, Iddrisu Abdul Rahman Iddrisu, cautioned the public against misinformation and unrealistic expectations surrounding the new policy. He urged residents to rely on official communication channels for credible and accurate information regarding the programme.
North Gonja District Health Director, Mawusi Wulwnaa, described the Free Primary Healthcare initiative as a major breakthrough for healthcare delivery in the district. She noted that the policy would strengthen healthcare services across all 22 health facilities in North Gonja and assured the public of the directorate’s commitment to its successful implementation.
The Presiding Member of the North Gonja District Assembly, Yahaya Yahuza, also expressed support for the initiative, stating that the piloting of the programme in the district would significantly improve healthcare accessibility for residents.
As part of the exercise, NHIA officials moved through various sections of the Daboya Market, engaging traders directly on the benefits, eligibility requirements, and registration processes for both the NHIS and the upcoming Free Primary Healthcare programme.
