PTA saves Ghana STEM Technical School from “No Chair and Table Syndrome”

The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of Ghana STEM Technical School at Sawua in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region has demonstrated its commitment to improving educational infrastructure and student welfare by donating furniture and constructing a temporary kitchen facility for the school.

The intervention comes in response to a persistent challenge that had affected students for some time. The school’s dining hall, despite serving a growing student population, lacked adequate chairs and tables, compelling many students to eat under uncomfortable conditions.

The situation, popularly described by stakeholders as a “no chair and table syndrome,” had become a major concern for both school authorities and parents.

To address the challenge, the PTA procured and donated 142 chairs and 70 tables or benches to furnish the dining hall and create a more conducive environment for students during meal times. In addition, the association constructed a temporary kitchen structure to support food preparation activities and improve catering services within the school.

Speaking during a brief ceremony to hand over the items to management, the PTA Chairman, Mr. Asante Krobea, said the association recognized the urgent need to improve conditions at the school and therefore decided to intervene.

According to him, quality education thrives in an environment where students are comfortable and have access to the basic facilities needed for their academic and personal development. He noted that the furniture donation and temporary kitchen project formed part of the PTA’s broader efforts to support the school in its quest to provide quality technical and STEM education.

Mr. Krobea further urged management, staff, and students to embrace a strong maintenance culture to ensure the longevity of the facilities and materials provided. He stressed that the furniture represented a significant investment by parents and should therefore be properly cared for in order to serve both current and future generations of students.

Receiving the items on behalf of the school, the Headmistress, Madam Naomi Owusu Aboagye, expressed profound appreciation to the PTA for responding to the school’s needs.

She described the intervention as timely and impactful, noting that the lack of furniture in the dining hall had been one of the school’s pressing challenges. According to her, the donation will significantly improve students’ dining experience and contribute to their overall well-being.

Madam Owusu Aboagye also lauded the PTA for constructing the temporary kitchen facility, explaining that it would greatly enhance food preparation and service delivery while plans are explored for more permanent infrastructure.

The Headmistress assured the PTA that management would put in place effective maintenance measures to safeguard the furniture and kitchen facility. She pledged that the school would ensure regular upkeep of the items to prolong their lifespan and maximize their benefits.

Students and staff welcomed the intervention, describing it as a major relief that would improve comfort during meal times and create a more organized dining environment.

The latest support from the PTA highlights the critical role parent associations continue to play in complementing government efforts to improve educational infrastructure and enhance teaching and learning outcomes across the country.
