Residents of Quansah, a community in Barekese in the Ashanti Region, have raised concerns over what they describe as serious health risks posed by smoke and emissions from a metal refinery company operating in the area.
According to the residents, smoke from the company’s operations has become a major source of worry, with concerns that the emissions could have adverse effects on their health and the environment.

They allege that particles released during the company’s production activities are affecting agricultural produce, with some plantain trees reportedly suffering burns and damage.
The residents have also expressed concern about the possible contamination of nearby water bodies, warning that particles from the refinery could affect water used for domestic purposes, including food preparation.

They say the situation has created fear among community members, who are worried about the long-term consequences of continued exposure to the smoke and other industrial emissions.
The residents are therefore appealing to the relevant environmental and health authorities to urgently intervene, investigate the company’s operations and assess the potential impact of its activities on the community.
They are also calling for measures to protect their health, livelihoods and the environment.

On our visit to the company, authorities of the firm declined speaking with us but pledged to resolve the matter.
At the assembly level, Henry, the environmental officer for Atwima Nwabiagya North District also declined having knowledge about the situation, also pledging to work together with authorities to resolve the situation after engaging the residents.
