
A devastating galamsey pit collapse in Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua district of the Ashanti Region, has claimed 8 lives after a tragic incident a week ago.
Initially, 7 people died, and 1 more person succumbed to injuries later.
The Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua, Hon. Seth Osei Akoto, visited the grieving families to offer condolences and console them during this difficult time.
Hon. Akoto upon his visit, took the opportunity to advise the community, particularly the youth, on the importance of engaging in responsible mining practices that prioritize their safety and security.
The Chief of Kasotie, Nana Osei Yaw, expressed gratitude to Hon. Akoto for his support and concern for the community.
The chief thanked the MP for thinking about the well-being of his people and urged the community to heed the MP’s advice on responsible mining practices.
The incident highlights the dangers associated with illegal small-scale mining, posing significant risks to human lives, the environment, and the country’s efforts to regulate the mining sector.
Authorities and local leaders are being urged to intensify monitoring, enforce mining regulations, and provide alternative livelihood programs to curb the practice and ensure community safety.
