Residents of Asupeaagya, a suburb within the Tanaso Electoral Area in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality of the Western North Region, have expressed deep concern over the lack of a school facility in the community, describing the situation as a “no school syndrome” that is gradually destroying the future of their children.
According to the residents, children of school-going age are compelled to walk long distances daily to nearby communities in search of education, a situation they say discourages effective teaching and learning while exposing the pupils to various dangers.
Some parents who spoke to Lawson news lamented that the absence of a school in Asupeaagya has led to increased absenteeism, school dropouts, and poor academic performance among children in the area.
They stressed that many young children are unable to endure the long journeys to and from school, especially during the rainy season, forcing some parents to keep their wards at home.
Some parents also revealed that due to the absence of a school in the community, their children are forced to remain at home until they grow older, often beyond the required school-going age, before deciding for themselves whether to pursue education or engage in other activities. Residents say the situation is gradually depriving many children of their educational future.
The residents further noted that despite several appeals to authorities over the years, the community is yet to receive a classroom block or any educational infrastructure to support the growing population.
They are therefore calling on the government, the Ghana Education Service, the Member of Parliament for the area, and the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly to urgently intervene and provide the community with a school facility.
According to them, investing in education remains the surest way of securing the future of the younger generation, adding that the current situation if left unaddressed, will continue to deny many children in Asupeaagya access to quality education.
Residents are hopeful that their plea will receive swift attention to help improve education and development within the community.
