Passengers clash with drivers over unauthorized GH¢5 fare increase to Offinso

Passengers travelling to Offinso have clashed with commercial drivers following an alleged unauthorized GH¢5 increase in transport fares.

The disagreement reportedly occurred after some drivers increased fares on the Offinso route, citing rising operational costs and the difficult conditions under which they operate.

The drivers explained that the increase had become necessary due to the recent hike in fuel prices, rising costs of spare parts, heavy traffic and the deplorable state of some roads along the route.

According to them, the rising cost of maintaining their vehicles, coupled with increased fuel expenditure and poor road conditions, has made it increasingly difficult to operate at the previous fare.

However, some passengers have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the unilateral increment, arguing that the additional GH¢5 places an extra financial burden on commuters who already struggle with the rising cost of living.

They called on the appropriate authorities to intervene and ensure that transport fares are increased only through the proper consultation and approval processes.

Some passengers further appealed to the government to provide state-owned buses as an alternative means of transportation to help ease the pressure on commuters and prevent similar disputes between passengers and commercial drivers.

They also urged the government to address the poor road conditions and other challenges contributing to the rising cost of public transportation.

The development has renewed calls for stronger engagement between transport operators, passengers and authorities to find a lasting solution to fare disputes on the Offinso route.
