Kumasi: Asamoah Gyan Sentenced 3 Years Over Diesel Theft

The Abuakwa Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality of the Ashanti Region has sentenced a 45-year-old tricycle rider, Asamoah Gyan, to 3 years imprisonment for stealing diesel.

Gyan was found guilty of siphoning three jerrycans of diesel from a truck belonging to Asanko Gold Mines at Bonteso in the Ashanti Region.

According to evidence presented to the court by the prosecution, Gyan’s act of siphoning the diesel was uncovered by Akwasi Martin, the complainant in the case.

According to prosecution, when Martin confronted Gyan during the act, Gyan called his accomplice, Kwadwo Bismark, who rushed to the scene and attempted to stab Martin with a cutlass. Martin, who also had a knife on him, pulled it out and stabbed Kwadwo Bismark, who is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

After the incident, Martin reported the case to the police, who arrested Gyan and later detained Martin for stabbing Bismark.

Both the complainant and the accused were arraigned before the court on August 1, 2025, for hearing.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Ntim, presented evidence to the court, which led to Gyan pleading guilty to count one, stealing, contrary to section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, Act 29/60.

The court, presided over by His Honor Jeffta Appau, sentenced Asamoah Gyan to three years imprisonment.

Akwasi Martin, on the other hand, pleaded not guilty to count two statement of offence and was granted bail in the amount of GHS 2,000 with one surety to ensure his reappearance on the next court date scheduled for September 12, 2025.

The court also directed that Kwadwo Bismark, who is on admission at a hospital, be prepared and arraigned before the honorable court.
