The residents of Santasi Fankyenebra in the Nhyiaeso Constituency of the Ashanti Region are sounding the alarm over a surge in criminal activities, particularly theft, which they attribute to the lack of functional streetlights in the area.
According to the residents, the darkness created by the non-functional streetlights has become a haven for thieves, who take advantage of the cover to carry out their nefarious activities without fear of being identified or caught.
One woman shared a harrowing experience of being attacked in the evening while on her way to purchase some items. She was not only robbed of her belongings but also sustained injuries to her arms and legs, making it difficult for her to walk or move.
Other residents echoed her concerns, stating that it is unsafe to walk in the area during the early morning or late evening hours due to the presence of thieves lurking in the shadows.
The residents pointed to the failure of government-installed streetlights as a major contributor to the insecurity in the area. While acknowledging the efforts of their Assembly Member, Hon. Dominic Osei Wusu, in providing some streetlights, they noted that many of these lights are no longer working or malfunctioned shortly after installation.
The community is making a passionate appeal to the Government, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), and the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso to intervene.
They are specifically calling for urgent repairs and proper maintenance of streetlights to ensure they function effectively and consistently.
Also, the residents are demanding increase in police presence or deployment of community volunteers to patrol and safeguard the neighborhood.
The residents hope that their pleas will be heard and acted upon to restore safety and security to their community.
