The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has taken a firm stance against illegal mining (galamsey) in the region, emphasizing the need for collective action to protect the forest reserves and water bodies.
Dr. Frank Amoakohene reaffirming President John Dramani Mahama’s declaration of forest reserves and water bodies as non-negotiable areas for galamsey, he entreated MMDCEs to lead the fight.
Speaking to the media after an engagement with party executives today,October 2,2025, the minister indicated that the MMDCEs being indigenes of the various Municipalities and Districts know every corner of their assemblies and therefore charged them to lead the course.
According to Hon. Amoakohene, most galamseyers have turned NDC members overnight just to find cover for their illegal activities, cautioning party members to fish those people out to face the law.
He further cautioned party leaders and party members to restrain from galamsey activities and support the good works of the government and the party as a whole.
“The engagement also tackled issues of governance and accountability where party leaders shared their opinions and suggested ways to put government on track,” he added.
Dr. Amoakohene’s initiative serves as a call to action for MMDCEs (Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives) to take ownership of the galamsey fight in their respective jurisdictions.
By working together, they can help protect the environment, preserve water bodies, and ensure sustainable development in the region.
The government’s commitment to tackling galamsey is evident in its intensified efforts to enforce the law and restore Ghana’s forests and water bodies.
The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has warned that no illegal miner will be spared, regardless of political affiliation.
