
The Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has assured families affected by the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium of government’s full support as they prepare to lay their loved ones to rest.

During a solemn meeting on Monday, December 1,2025, to discuss funeral arrangements, the Deputy Minister met with grieving relatives, community leaders, and local authorities to offer condolences on behalf of the Ministry of Defence and the Government of Ghana.
He described the incident which claimed several lives and left dozens injured as “one of the most heartbreaking moments the nation has faced in recent times.”

Speaking after closed-door engagements with the families, the Deputy Minister announced that government would cover the cost of all funerals, including coffins, transportation, burial arrangements, and other related expenses. He said the support was meant to ease the heavy burden on families still reeling from shock and anguish.
In a heartfelt address, the minister announced a GH¢150,000 relief package for each bereaved family, GH¢50,000 to cover funeral expenses and a further GH¢100,000 as compensation, he further pledged that senior government officials would stand with them throughout this painful time.

“No family should have to endure this pain alone. The state stands firmly with you in this dark hour,” he said. “We will ensure that your loved ones are given a dignified farewell.”
He further noted that the Ministry is collaborating with the Armed Forces, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and health facilities treating the injured to ensure comprehensive assistance. A review of security and crowd-control protocols at national events has also begun, with the Defence Ministry pledging reforms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Family representatives expressed gratitude for the government’s intervention, describing the support as timely and compassionate. Some called for a full investigation to uncover the circumstances leading to the stampede.
The Deputy Minister assured them that a formal inquiry was already underway and that findings would be made public.

The tragic incident at El-Wak has sparked nationwide mourning, with various organisations, civil society groups, and individuals extending support to victims. As preparations for the funerals proceed, the government says it remains committed to standing with affected families every step of the way.
