Organized Labour Ghana has urged the government to convert macroeconomic gains into meaningful employment opportunities, warning that failure to do so could lead to a national crisis.
The call was made by Ms. Felicia Kraja, Northern Regional Secretary of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), during the 2026 Savannah Regional May Day Parade held in Damongo.
The event, organised under the theme “Pivoting to Growth, Jobs and Sustainable Livelihoods Beyond Macroeconomic Stability,” brought together members of commercial and industrial workers’ unions, teachers’ unions, nurses’ unions, bankers’ unions, as well as civil and public service unions from the Northern, North East and Savannah regions to celebrate Ghanaian workers.
Speaking on behalf of the TUC General Secretary, Ms. Kraja stressed that economic stability must translate into decent and sustainable jobs for ordinary citizens. She appealed to the government to ensure that gains made at the macroeconomic level result in tangible employment opportunities for the people.
She also expressed concern over deteriorating conditions of service, citing unsafe working environments and poor remuneration as major challenges confronting Ghanaian workers. According to her, such conditions continue to undermine productivity and worker morale.
Ms. Kraja further urged the government and future administrations to protect the public service from political interference and manipulation.
Representing the government, the Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Salisu Yussif Bia Wurbe Esq., reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to transparency and accountable governance. He called on labour unions to collaborate with the state in addressing the growing “get-rich-quick” mentality among the youth, as well as the increasing abuse of illicit drugs.
The ceremony also recognised outstanding workers and unions for their dedication and contribution to national development, with recipients receiving home appliances and cash prizes.
