The Holy Father, Pope Pope Leo XIV, has elevated the Apostolic Vicariate of Donkorkrom in Ghana to a full Diocese, marking a significant milestone in the growth of the Catholic Church in the country.
According to a report by Vatican News released on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the newly created Diocese of Donkorkrom will maintain the same name and territorial boundaries as the former Apostolic Vicariate and will now serve as a suffragan diocese under the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Accra.
The Holy Father has also appointed His Excellency Mgr. John Alphonse Asiedu as the first Bishop of the Diocese of Donkorkrom. Until his appointment, Bishop Asiedu served as the Apostolic Vicar of Donkorkrom.
The announcement coincides with Bishop Asiedu’s 64th birthday, making the occasion a double celebration for the Catholic leader and the faithful in the area.
Located in eastern Ghana, the Diocese of Donkorkrom covers a land area of about 5,040 square kilometres and serves a population of 228,754 people, including 37,462 Catholics.
The new diocese currently has nine parishes, 14 educational institutions and three charitable organisations dedicated to supporting communities within its jurisdiction.
Church statistics further indicate that the diocese is served by 14 diocesan priests, eight religious priests and 22 religious sisters, with two seminarians currently undergoing formation.
The elevation of Donkorkrom to diocesan status is expected to strengthen evangelisation efforts and enhance the administrative and pastoral work of the Catholic Church in the region.
