The Coalition of Unemployed Trained Teachers has voiced strong disappointment following the Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu’s recent announcement that government will recruit 6,100 new teachers this year. According to the group, the stated number falls far below expectations and fails to address the growing backlog of trained teachers who remain unemployed after completing their national service in January and February 2025.
In a statement released to the media, the coalition said the minister’s announcement has left many of its members “frustrated, overlooked, and uncertain about their future in the profession for which they were trained.” The group noted that thousands of qualified teachers remain at home despite the country’s ongoing challenges with teacher shortages, especially in rural areas.
The coalition argued that the government’s recruitment target does not reflect the actual number of trained teachers awaiting posting across the nation. They further indicated that many of their members have met all required criteria including passing the licensure examination yet have received no communication regarding permanent placement.
The group is therefore calling on the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES), and relevant stakeholders to review the recruitment quota, prioritize unemployed trained teachers, and provide a clear roadmap on postings. According to them, failure to address the issue urgently risks worsening teacher frustration and affecting morale among newly trained educators.
The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue but warned that it will not hesitate to explore further action if the concerns of unemployed trained teachers continue to be ignored.
