NPP Internal Race: “Stop Imposing Bawumia on Us if You Don’t Want Defeat in 2028” – Grassroots Tell Executives

Tensions appear to be mounting within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as sections of the party’s grassroots have issued a strong warning to national and regional executives, urging them to avoid what they describe as attempts to “impose” former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on the party ahead of the January 2026 internal contests.

In interactions with journalists and during constituency-level engagements, several base-level members expressed dissatisfaction over what they perceive as a coordinated effort by some party executives to promote Dr. Bawumia as the automatic choice for the party going into the 2028 election cycle.

According to them, such actions risk deepening internal discontent and could potentially push the party toward electoral defeat if not addressed early.

Some grassroots activists argue that the party must remain open, competitive, and transparent in its internal selection processes, insisting that any form of favoritism could alienate longstanding supporters.

They claim that the NPP’s past successes have been built on internal democracy and the freedom of the base to decide who leads the party at any time.

“We are not against any candidate,” one constituency-level organizer emphasized, “but the party belongs to all of us. If the executives try to impose anyone, whether it is Dr. Bawumia or any other aspirant it will only divide the party and weaken us before 2028.”

Others believe that the party’s chances in future national elections could be compromised if leadership fails to heed early signals of discontent. They argue that unity, fairness, and respect for internal processes are essential if the NPP hopes to remain competitive.

Meanwhile, some executives have dismissed suggestions of favoritism, maintaining that the party remains committed to democratic principles and has not endorsed any candidate ahead of the next internal contest. They urge members to focus on strengthening party structures rather than fueling suspicion.

Political observers note that internal debates of this nature are not unusual in major political parties, especially in the lead-up to leadership transitions.

However, they caution that the NPP’s ability to manage internal tensions early could determine its cohesion going into the 2028 election cycle.

As discussions continue, the party appears set for a vigorous and closely watched internal race, with the voices of the grassroots expected to play a significant role in shaping the direction of the NPP’s future leadership.
