The Chief of Tinga and Council of State Member for the Savannah Region, Gariba Abutu Sampson, has declared zero tolerance for drug abuse and environmental destruction, describing the twin challenges as a growing threat to the future of the youth in the area.
According to him, drug abuse among young people has reached alarming levels, with devastating consequences for individuals, families, and society at large.
He said the situation requires urgent intervention and called on traditional authorities to rise to the occasion by enforcing a total ban on drug abuse and addressing environmental destruction caused by illegal mining activities in the Savannah Region. He noted that the menace has already claimed many lives and left others devastated within communities.
Alhaji Sampson made the remarks during the launch of the Tingawura Assa Foundation, an initiative aimed at empowering young people in the region.
“Drug abuse among our youth is of grave concern to me. My aim is to bring this fight directly to our communities, schools and homes,” Gariba Sampson stated.
“From today, I am declaring a zero-tolerance stance against substance abuse throughout the region,” he added.
He explained that the foundation would serve as a vehicle to complement the government’s development efforts by creating hope and opportunities for young people and vulnerable groups in society.
He stressed that education remains one of the most powerful tools for transformation and said this reality has motivated him to engage students directly.
Gariba Abutu Sampson further noted that while drug and substance abuse is becoming one of the biggest threats confronting the youth, environmental destruction continues to endanger communities. To demonstrate his commitment to the initiative, he donated GH¢100,000 as seed capital for the foundation.
Two committees were also inaugurated during the event , the Tinga Community Development Committee, which will oversee developmental activities in the community, and the Tinga Speed Committee, tasked with reducing reckless riding and overspeeding in the area.
