Abolishment of Punishment in Basic Schools, a Threat to Ghana’s Future – Osei Tutu Headteacher

The headteacher of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II International School in the Asawase Constituency of the Ashanti Region, Mr. Allen Owusu Ababio, has expressed concerns over the abolishment of punishment in basic schools, citing it as a significant threat to Ghana’s future.

Speaking at the school’s graduation ceremony on August 14, 2025, Mr. Ababio emphasized that punishment serves as a deterrent and helps maintain discipline in schools.

Without punishment, Mr. Ababio believes there may be a lack of structure and accountability, potentially leading to increased misbehavior among students. He noted that some students carry harmful tools like scissors and small knives to school for self-defense, indicating a rise in aggression and indiscipline.

According to Mr. Ababio, this situation has resulted in disrespect towards teachers and negatively impacted academic performance.

He stressed that teachers, including himself, face significant challenges in maintaining discipline without the option of punishment. “We receive all manner of insults and to some extent beatings from parents and guardians just for trying to shape the behavior of the nation’s future generation,” he stated.

Furthermore, teachers may be invited by the police for interrogation or face legal action for punishing a student, regardless of the offense’s gravity.

Mr. Ababio proposes that the Ghana government, Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, and other stakeholders reconsider the policy and consider limitations to punishment in schools rather than abolishment. By exploring alternative discipline methods and supporting headteachers and teachers, Ghana can work towards creating a positive and effective learning environment for all students.

Mr. Allen Owusu Ababio highlighted that by adopting these methods, schools can maintain discipline while promoting a supportive learning environment.
